One design that we do not often seen used for kitchen cabinets anymore is Victorian. This is a type of Old World design that is graceful, beautiful, and one of the more classic of any design. Not many people choose this type of design because their homes have the modern or contemporary look that is so common anymore. Anyone who has had the pleasure of getting a close look at Victorian cabinets have seen the elegant look they bring to the room and the craftsmanship that is used to make them.
Materials
The most common material that is used for Victorian kitchen cabinets is wood. Expect to pay good money for them because trying to use the cheaper woods that are easily warped and dented will not last very long or give you the look you want. The dark woods are the best to use because they help to bring a warmth and elegance to the room that will work with the chandelier and other old world decorations in the kitchen.
If you are under a strict budget then you should substitute the wood for veneer. This is less then half of the cost of wood and has a similar look to it. Although it will not bring the same elegance that real wood can offer it is a great way to start. If you go with this material you need to be careful because it damages easily.
Styles
There are two types of styles that you are able to use for this type of cabinet. The first is a basic and is the most popular of the two. The face of the cabinets has a solid finish and color with only a few minor etchings in the wood. This style helps to make it elegant – but at the same time very simple looking.
The other style that you can do is more involved and more expensive. To give it a more authentic look you will want the face of the Victorian cabinets to be slightly cracked and distressed. This will make it appear older – but no less elegant. You need to be careful about choosing this design. You don’t want it to look too ‘ancient’ because then it will turn from being Victorian to being rustic or country.
