Kitchen Cabinet Materials

One of the most important things you need to consider when trying to design cabinets for your kitchen are the type of materials that you want to use to make them. Each material has its own strengths, disadvantages, and styles. The one you choose will depend on how much you are willing to spend and the theme you are using for your kitchen.

Wood Cabinets

The most common material that people will use for their kitchen cabinets is wood. This material can come from Maple, Birch, Cherry, Oak, and Pine. The more durable the wood the more expensive it will be – but you will have the satisfaction in knowing that you are using something that will look great and last for years.

People on a budget who want wood cabinets should choose the Pine. This is the more affordable of them all and has a natural – but rustic look to it that makes it perfect to use when designing contemporary cabinets. The only downside to these is that they are a type of soft wood, making them vulnerable to dents and scratches.

Veneer Cabinets

spend the money in making it. These are made with a thing piece of wood that has been glued over plywood. Although it has the appearance of wood it does not feel like wood nor does it have its quality. These can be easily damaged and you may find that you have to replace after a few years.

Laminate Cabinets

Laminate cabinets are not as affordable as veneer – but not quite as expensive as wood cabinets. They are made by sealing layers paper that has been soaked in resin through a special heating process. This helps to form a durable and flexible material. This particular material is versatile and allows you to texture and color it to match your kitchen. They are more available in white and ivory colors and have a gloss finish to create a bright kitchen.

Glass Cabinets

Glass is becoming increasingly popular as the years go by. This helps to provide your kitchen with more light by reflecting the natural light that streams in through the day. You can design these cabinets to be all glass or to be bordered by wood. If you don’t want all of your dishes on display than you can use frosted or tinted glass.

Stainless Steel Cabinets

Stainless steel is the ideal material to use on your modern kitchen cabinets. You will find these mainly used in restaurant kitchens or for household appliances. But now you can use it to design cabinets that are durable and able to withstand dramatic change in temperature and condensation. Besides looking great it is one of the easiest to keep clean. The only downside to this is that it can be scratched easily and is rather expensive.
