When just one of our kitchen cabinets breaks it would be easy for us to simply replace it with the exact same door. However, not all of us have the money in order to do this. We do not want to spend $50 or more to replace something that we could possibly repair on our own.
- Sometimes the problem is a simple scratch that was caused when a pan or another door came into contact with it. If this is the case then fixing it can cost you as little as $10. All you need is a simple wood cabinet fill stick or felt marker that matches the color of your wood cabinets. You use it to cover the scratch or fill in any areas where the paint or wood has been peeled off.
- There are times when the repair requires more than a simple marker to put it back together. If you have a loose cabinet that is connected to a wall use a 3” by 3” angle bracket to re-secure it. You can find these for less then $10 at any hardware store. All you have to do is use an electric drill to screw it into the stud in the wall and into the cabinet.
- Any cabinets that look worn out and grimy require a fresh coat of paint. To do this simply remove it and cover the hinges with masking tape. Use interior paint that matches the color of the cabinet and paint a few thin layers over it. Make sure to clean it down before you paint.
- If your cabinet handles and knobs are worn out or broken than it is time to invest in new ones. These are not very expensive and are very easy to install. You can purchase the same ones as before or purchase something a bit more decorative. Just make sure that the holes in the cabinets match the new knobs.
- If your cabinet has a broken piece the best way to repair it is to use wood glue. Apply a thin layer of the glue to the broken piece and hold it back in place. Make sure to apply pressure for a few minutes. You can also use a clamp that will hold it in place for an hour.
- Sometimes the cabinets can stick making it difficult to open them. To fix this purchase a lubricant from the nearest hardware store. To apply it, remove the drawers or cabinets and clean the track to remove dirt and grime. Spray the lubricant on the tracks as well as the rollers. Most lubricants cost between $10 to $20.
