Wouldn’t it be great if we could change up the look of our kitchen without having to put down new floors, install new countertops, and buy all new appliances? The good news is that you can! The best way to remodel your home without spending a fortune is to refinish the kitchen cabinets.
You are going to start by taking all of the dishes, food, and miscellaneous items out of the cabinets and drawers. It is best to stick all of the dishes onto the dining room table and put everything else into a large box.
Now that everything is out you can remove the shelves. While you do this inspect them and the cabinets for chips, dents, or any deformities. If they need to be replaced than now is the best time to do it.
Place a drop cloth over the counters and floor. Using the right tools, take the handles and hinges from the cabinet doors. Make sure to put them in a place where they won’t get lost or confused with other items.
Wash the cabinets, drawers, and doors using a household cleaner and a soft cloth. Rinse them off and dry them thoroughly.
Use wood putty or wood dowels and glue to fill in any holes. This will include the hinge holes.
The best way to get rid of any irregularities is to lightly sand them down. This only needs to be done on the face of everything.
Now comes the fun part. Choose a color pain or varnish that you love. Because the cabinets make up most of the kitchen you can be creative and take things in a new direction if you would like. You will want to apply the paint or varnish to the cabinet doors starting from the top and working your way to the bottom. The drawers and the frames should be last.
Apply at least two coats of paint and give them each between four to eight hours to dry. When you are satisfied with how they look you can replace the handles and use new hinges for the doors.
