How To Make Antique Cabinets

There might be a lot of people who are going modern with their homes – but a few of us are going back to the style that is classic and will never be forgotten – vintage. Vintage clothes and designs and making a comeback and many people are applying these changes in their kitchen.

When designing a vintage kitchen you want to replace your contemporary cabinets with antique cabinets. There are two options; you can purchase them and spend hundreds of dollars or you can make them yourself. Obviously the most affordable choice is for you to make them yourself. There are two ways to create an antique cabinet; staining and distressing.

Staining

You will need to buy medium grit sand paper between eighty to one hundred and twenty, four inch paint brush, roll of paper towels, sponge, and stain in the color of your choice.

Begin with the cabinets that have already been stained or painted a lighter color. Sand them down lightly with the medium grit sandpaper.

Stains can be found in a variety of colors. Choose the one that you love the most (preferably dark) and get at least one can of it. Lightly apply the stain to the cabinets with the paintbrush.

Use the sponge and paper towels to wipe the stain off. This is what gives it the texture that makes it look like an antique.

You want the texture to look natural. To accomplish this you need to focus the stain around the areas of the cabinet that would get the most wear and tear. This is usually around the edges and handles.

After they are dry install new handles that match the look you have created.

Distressing

In order to use the distressing method the cabinets have to have been painted. If they are not than you are going to want to paint them yourself. Choose a color that will fit your décor. Off white is a common choice – but you can go bright if you want to.

Gently sand around the edges and handles to create a natural worn look. You want to expose some of the wood beneath the paint. For a more dramatic look sand the center of the cabinets.
