Sometimes the best way to create more flare in your kitchen is to simply add something new onto the cabinets rather than replacing them all. Crown molding is a great detail to add into any room. It helps to create a more attractive presence without all of the cost. The best part is that installing it does not take that much time and you can do it yourself.
To start, cut out 1 to 1 ½ inch strips of wood. If you want to save money than cut off particleboard so that it will fit on the top edge of the cabinets.
Nail down the strips onto the top edges of the cabinets. This will be the nailing strip for the crown molding and will prevent you from having to nailing anything down into the finished product. If you can, use an air finish nailer to make it quick and easy for you. If you cannot get your hands on one than a hammer and finishing nails will work just as well.
Carefully cut the crown molding so that it fits perfectly. Most of the cabinets are installed to be square. Because of this you will have a better time cutting them into a 45 degree angle at the corners. If they are custom angled cabinets than you will have to be more precise in the measurements.
Nail down the cut crown molding onto the nailing strip at the bottom of the cabinets. You will also need to use an air finish nailer or the finishing nails.
To finish the crown molding, fill in the nail holes and cover other problem area with wood filler. Paint or stain the molding to match the look of the cabinets. If you want to stick this step than use pre-finished crown molding.
